Pleydell Smithyman – food, glorious food!
Food is a high performing department

Ruxley Manor

As food retailing continues to play a major part in the success of garden centres, now is the maybe the time to re-evaluate how this most important sector is positioned within the structure of the garden centre.

Whether creating a first time café or expanding to develop a bespoke Restaurant offer, Garden Centres are ahead of the field in being able to offer superb welcoming, intimate dining offering a quality food and service second to none.

Couple this with a  great food hall or farm shop offering customers quality local produce with great provenance and what a draw we have to keep loyal customers happy and attract a new audience looking for something that little bit different.

Positioning of a restaurant has always been a key decision when considering how and where to site a new facility to ensure it not only creates a great customer experience in its own right but also becomes part of the customer journey and  encourages and ensures the whole centre benefits. Equally we now need to consider carefully creating maybe additional separate entrances and give thought to how a food hall/farmshop could be located so it is part of the centre but also would operate independently if necessary.

Customers are becoming ever more discerning, looking for value for money, great food, friendly and efficient service and a welcoming ambience, and Garden Centre Restaurants are shining examples of ‘how to do it well’
