Peat-free made simple: what retailers should know now
Stand 10B62

Peat-free composts have caused divided opinions among growers and gardeners, but with the know-how – and the right product –  peat-free can deliver excellent results, while helping the industry move towards a more environmentally conscious future.

Opting for peat-free has many benefits. Peatlands are vital habitats and one of the worlds most effective carbon stores. Using peat in growing media not only negatively impacts these ecosystems, but also releases carbon back into the atmosphere, negatively impacting climate change. Switching to peat-free, is an easy way for gardeners and retailers to support more sustainable practices that protect biodiversity and reduce negative environmental impact.

If you choose to go peat-free it doesnt mean compromising the abundance in your garden—it simply calls for a few minor tweaks. Knowing when to water is first. Some peat-free mixes can dry out quickly, however, it's noted they can retain plenty of moisture below the surface. Heart of Edens blend is designed to hold water more effectively than other peat-free alternatives. We recommend checking 2–3cm down before reaching for the watering can, there could be more moisture than you think.

Second, by adding a thick layer of mulch on top of your peat-free compost it not only conserves water, it has other benefits too. Heart of Eden offers mulches to complement their peat-free compost in their product range - a super way to protect young plants, suppress weeds and retain moisture in beds, borders and pots.

Third, quality. Not all peat-free composts are created equal, which is why choosing a trusted blend matters. Heart of EdenPeat-Free Multipurpose Compost is tried, tested, and proven to provide reliable performance.

And finally, remember that nutrients in any compost will only last so long—typically six to eight weeks. Supplementing with a liquid feed at the right stage of growth gives plants the support they need to flourish.

For those keen to explore the products first-hand and discuss the nuances of successful peat-free growing, the Heart of Eden team will be on Stand 10B62 at Glee.
