The final touches are being put to Glee 2022 where an impressive list of suppliers will join with UK and international key decision makers, buyers and trend setters, to showcase the future of gardening.

As the most important exhibition in its field, Glee serves as a vibrant networking and face-to-face trading hub, whilst the new June date will greatly strengthen its strategic position in the garden centre buying calendar.

With millions of Brits joining the ranks of gardeners over the past two years the industry has been positively booming and Glee, as its most important trade showcase, will reflect this market strength and resilience. The show will offer an unrivalled launch platform to over 400 exhibitors – more than 150 of them new for 2022 - and the biggest contingent of global brands since 2019.

The event will have a real summer festival feel thanks to a new outdoor demo area – Fire, Grill & Chill – giving outdoor entertaining companies a chance to show off their skills. Leading brands such as Landmann, Kamado Joe, Fandango Fire Tools, Cheeky Charlie Oven Company, Northwest Asia and Kadai will all be displaying their latest barbecues, pizza ovens and grills in this area, which will also feature a drinks truck, ice cream, daily live music and will provide the backdrop to this year’s Glee Party on June 28th at 5pm.

Shining a spotlight on new product development will be the ground-breaking Glee Innovator Zone, which has helped more than 275 companies penetrate the garden retail market since 2009, bridging the gap between pre-commercial new product ideas and market ready launches from established brands. This is the place to spot the stars of the future!

Extending the celebration of all things new will be the GTN-sponsored New Product Showcase, where exceptional new products will compete with firm favourites and proven best-sellers for the New Product Awards. On June 28th and 29th the top three shortlisted entries will make their pitch to a judging panel of industry experts, who will be looking for key factors such as innovation, design, promotion and saleability. The winners of 17 categories will be announced at close of play on June 29th.

The spotlight will also shine on exclusively British made products, in recognition of the enormous demand for locally sourced articles. UK garden manufacturers will be easy to locate thanks to the Made in Britain exhibitor filter, which you can access here. Buyers can also filter for sustainable products made of natural, recycled, recyclable or compostable materials, browse specific product categories or find suppliers from other countries.

With sustainability and wellbeing of central importance, June 2022 will see the launch of Giving at Glee, a series of initiatives that give back to the community. Visitors and exhibitors alike are invited to dress in their brightest floral attire for Floral Thursdayon 30th June and help raise money for the Greenfingers charity. Show organiser, Hyve, has also partnered with Grow My Tree, which will enable all Glee attendees to participate by planting their own tree.

Cross-Sector Sourcing

With eight dedicated product sectors, Glee will offer exceptional crossover buying opportunities, from the very best plants and organic garden care to indoor and outdoor furniture, giftware and apparel.

Garden Care is the largest category at Glee, encompassing growing media, compost, fertilisers, grow-your-own equipment, garden machinery, tools and accessories. Exhibitors include: Mr Fothergills Seeds, Burgon & Ball, Carbon Gold, CJ Wildlife, Dalefoot Composts, DJ Turfcare, Johnsons Lawn Seed, Durston Garden Products, Eden Horticulture, Elho, Fallen Fruits, Gardening Naturally, Hozelock, Gardena, Hygeia, Jardinopia, King's Seeds, Oregon Tool UK, Plantsmith, PTMD Collection, Sipcam, Smart Garden Products, Spear & Jackson, The Real Soil Company, Thorndown, Treadstone, Vegepod, Vitax, Wildlife World, Yorkshire Flowerpots and Zest.

Glee’s Landscaping and Garden Decoration zone will have some show-stopping stands from some of the most influential brands in this sector. Hard landscaping and aggregates, fencing solutions, garden buildings, pots and planters, decorative and functional garden structures, soft landscaping, statues, water features and timber supplies can all be found in this part of the show, with exhibitors that include: Woodlodge, AMES UK, Azpects, Deco-Pak, Edelman, Enigma Home & Garden, Fence Buddy, Fountasia, Gardenstone, Ivyline, Kelkay Ltd., Kiln Fired Pottery, Meadow View Stone Ltd., Primeur, Rubi UK, Smartedge, The Garden Village, UK Bamboo Supplies, and Willowstone Garden Products.

Outdoor Entertaining will come into its own with not just a dedicated show sector but a fabulous new outside demo area, Fire, Grill & Chill. Al fresco dining, entertaining, working and living have all contributed to a meteoric rise for this sector and buyers can look forward to a wealth of inspiration in the realms of garden furniture, barbeques, parasols, chimeneas, conservatory furniture, outdoor play and camping essentials. Exhibitors will include: Cadac, Campingaz, Homefire, Cheeky Charlie Oven Company, Igloo, Fandango Fire Tools, Hex Living, Shatchi, Mookie Toys, Napoleon Grills, Norfolk Leisure Lifestyle, Ltd., Pit Boss, Premier Decorations, Primus, Riverco Trading, Sun Time and Z Grills Inc.

Glee Plants – the Green Heart of the show - is where you can source the best in nursery stock, bedding plants, trees and shrubs, as well as those all-important houseplants, sales of which have boomed to more than £4billion as Brits go wild for all things green. Brands you can look forward to seeing here are: Craigmarloch Nurseries, Golden Grove Nursery, Green Inspiration Plants, Happy Plants, Henry Bell & Co, Javado, Key Essentials, Laurica Plants, MNP Flowers, The Bransford Webbs Plant Company and The Christmas Cabin.

It isn’t just garden centres or outdoor living specialists who’ll find a lot to love at Glee, with the Home, Gift & Clothing sector offering inspirational sourcing to retailers in this market from seasonal decorations, greetings cards and stationery, outdoor clothing and accessories, picnicware, games, toys, books, home fragrance, home décor and more, serving both this Christmas season and beyond to spring/summer 2023. Brands exhibiting in this sector include: Woodmansterne, UK Greetings, Noel Tatt, Museums & Galleries, Vent for Change, Stubbs Mugs, Creative Products, Deluxe Homeart, Emily Victoria Candles, Bolsius Candles, HJ Hall, Tilnar Art, Willsow; English Tea Shop, M&Co, Kidzplay, Summit/PMS International, Giftware Trading, JT England, Mood Bears, Leon Boots Co. and the Lake District Umbrella Company.

With pet products estimated to be worth over £6bn in the UK (Statista report June 2021), it isn’t all about home and giftware for humans! Glee’s dedicated PAW (Pet & Animal Wellbeing) sector will offer the goods you need to attract high-spending pet parents to your store, with a broad cross-section of grooming, pet food, pet accessories, wild animal wellbeing, bird feeders, pet toys and wildlife gardening products. Brands will include: Barking Bags, Benchmark Kennels Ltd, Christies Direct, Ditsy Pet Ltd., Goodchaps, Green Feathers, Jacobi Jayne & Company, Little Hay Company, Park Life Pet Ltd., Scruffs, and WHM Pet Group Ltd.

For many garden centres and other destination retail outlets, Food & Catering is one of the most vital aspects of their customer offering, with cafes and restaurants bringing in great profits throughout the year. This also constitutes an important sector of Glee, with companies such as The Secret Garden Distillery keen to present their product range to the trade at Glee.

Food & Catering will sit alongside the complementary Retail Experiences & Services, where you can meet the experts at: CSY Retail Systems, Dascher, Fordingbridge, Garden Connect, Gralyn Joinery, Melitta Professional Coffee Solutions, Retail Vista, Nuepos, Open Retail Solutions, Paysagea, QCR Recycling Equipment Ltd., Smiemans Projecten B.V., Stagecraft, Timber Displays Ltd., Tudor Tea & Coffee, and UCC Coffee UK Ltd.

Global Industry Showcase

Amongst the 70+ international brands due to exhibit at Glee 2022, 13 have already confirmed their place within the Indian Pavilion and the show is also looking forward to welcoming its first ever exhibitor from Uzbekistan, alongside companies fromCanada, Korea and China.

The European contingent will feature strong representation from that other famous gardening nation, The Netherlands, to include Elho, Kaemingk, Capi Europe, Kapiteyn B.V., Edelman, Madison B.V., Impulse Plants B.V., Bonfeu, JAVADO, 200 Fahrenheit, Plenty Gifts, Green Inspiration Plants, and Smiemans Projecten B.V. Glee’s new partnership with Team France Export, Business France and the Choose France™ initiative will bring Forest Style SAS (Soulet / Cerland), Vertiable SAS, Paysagea SAS and Hareau (Weenect) to the NEC, whilst key German brands, Scheurich and Burstenhaus Redecker Gmbh will also be present, alongside suppliers from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Moldova, Norway and Poland.

Taking Centre Stage

The best of garden retailing will once again be celebrated at Glee with the Buyers Power List awards, to be held on Tuesday 28th June at 5:00pm.  The prestigious awards will recognise the individual buyers and buying teams who have gone above and beyond to make a difference within the garden retail industry in the past year.

As always, Glee will offer visitors valuable content free of charge via The Stage seminar programme; a programme that has been expertly curated to tackle key themes and trends that are currently shaping consumer demand and the future of garden retail. This year’s schedule will include topics such as ‘The opportunity for growth in the current environment’ (Tuesday 28th, 11:00 – 12:00), ‘Sustaining and managing growth’ (Tuesday 28th, 13:30 – 14:15), ‘2023 Home and Outdoor living trends’ (Wednesday 29th, 13:30 – 14:15), and ‘How garden centres can adapt to a sustainable and successful long-term online strategy’ (Thursday 30th, 11:00 – 11:30).

Sealing Glee’s position as the industry’s most important networking hub, the show will again play host to our vital trade associations: Gardenex, GIMA (Garden Industry Manufacturers Association) and HTA, all of which are looking forward to seeing their existing members on the show floor, meeting with potential new members and offering their invaluable advice and expertise to those who need it.

GIMA will run its popular speed-networking event, Buyers Connect*, for the duration of the event, whilst Gardenex will also be hosting 30 international Buyer Connect events**. These short but sweet business meetings offer a golden opportunity to make personal contacts with the most sought-after buyers and suppliers, without wasting any precious show time.

Matthew Mein, Glee’s Event Director, said: “We are incredibly excited about the first-ever summer edition of Glee and proud to invite garden centres and other retailers to this year’s sell-out show.

“Our industry still faces significant challenges – mostly due to macro-economic factors and supply chain logistics – but it never ceases to inspire with constant innovation, drive and positivity. The millions of new gardeners who joined our ranks during lockdown are here to stay and will be rolling up their sleeves in the great outdoors for years to come. Glee is THE place where retailers can fulfill the requirements of all their customers – be they grow-your-own newbies and houseplant enthusiasts, veteran allotment holders, al fresco entertainers or house and garden proud Brits. With over 400 exhibitors raring to go, the sourcing opportunities at Glee this year are tremendous. We can’t wait to see you all at the show!”

Burgon & Ball at Glee 2022: new improved Kneelo

Burgon & Ball will be showing its ranges of innovative and beautiful tools; creative gardening accessories; indoor gardening ranges; and inspired gift ideas...

Burgon & Ball, the UK’s longest-established designer and manufacturer of garden tools and accessories, will be showing its ranges of innovative and beautiful tools; creative gardening accessories; indoor gardening ranges; and inspired gift ideas.

Retailers will be able to discover a major update to Kneelo®, the name which introduced the revolutionary memory foam kneeler category to the market back in 2010.

The innovative Kneelo design was created by applying 21st-century foam technology to the everyday garden kneeler to make it the most comfortable and luxurious it could be. This inspired idea has made it consistently a best seller ever since.

Kneelo’s classic design has now been re-imagined. New construction has been developed and applied across the Kneelo ranges of kneelers and knee pads. With these design changes delivering the ultimate in comfort, Kneelo is set to work harder than ever for retailers.

The design changes include:

Construction

New Kneelo has an improved foam construction inside, making it more comfortable and luxurious than ever.

Colour

Three unique colours join the popular range, creating an attractive and eye-catching display in store. Sangria (soft red), Wheatsheaf (pale yellow ochre) and Evergreen (the distinctive Burgon & Ball dark green) extend the Kneelo palette in a softer, more contemporary direction.

Pattern

A new textured crosshatch design on the cover of the new colour options gives Kneelo a unique and distinctive look.

Branding

The new Kneelo features strong Burgon & Ball branding, with printed logos added to the reverse of both kneeler and knee pads.

These design changes help to differentiate the unique Kneelo unique proposition - helping shoppers to seek out and ask for it by name.

Designed to retail at £16.99, new Kneelo is a higher-value, higher-margin, market-leading kneeler, popular for self-purchase and also a thoughtful gardening gift. The new, improved Kneelo has the quality, the aspirational appeal, and the reassurance of a brand leader that gardeners look for. It’s set to win a new generation of loyal gardening devotees as the success story continues.

Make a note to visit Burgon & Ball on stand 6E30-F31 to see the full range of exciting products on offer from this respected name in gardening.

Evergreen Garden Care continues its peat-free journey

Evergreen Garden Care (EGC) is set to continue its peat-free journey to help drive sustainability efforts in the gardening category forward – with the aim of making major brands Miracle-Gro and Levington 100% peat-free within the next few years...

Evergreen Garden Care (EGC) is set to continue its peat-free journey to help drive sustainability efforts in the gardening category forward – with the aim of making major brands Miracle-Gro and Levington 100% peat-free within the next few years.

Ahead of the government regulations, EGC continues to pave the way setting the industry standard through product action, financial investment and leading discussion and education.

To continue its environment-focused initiative of removing peat from all compost products, EGC has invested £7 million this year alone on the transition. The investment consists of improved supply chain and storage capacity. The journey to peat free is not a simple one, with peat-free compost containing a greater variety of raw materials that need to be sourced from multiple locations across the world versus peat compost which is compiled mostly of a singular ingredient.

This year, EGC will extend its position as the most comprehensive and high-quality peat-free brand on the market, by launching a Levington John Innes Peat-Free Range, completing its entirely peat-free portfolio.

Mower Edge Border leads Primeur’s product launches

Primeur is thrilled to unveil a host of products that are brand NEW for Glee this year, and leading the charge is an exciting new Mower Edge Border in Earth and Grey, which is also confirmed as the company’s entry into this year’s New Product Showcase...

Primeur is thrilled to unveil a host of products that are brand NEW for Glee this year, with fresh additions to its Tierra Verde self-watering planters, EZ Border garden borders, Eco Way stepping-stones and Easy Tile flooring collections.

Leading the charge for this year’s show is an exciting new Mower Edge Border in Earth and Grey, which is also confirmed as the company’s entry into this year’s New Product Showcase, where the team will be hoping to scoop yet another award for its bulging trophy shelf!

New innovation for tidy lawn edges

The innovative new Mower Edge Border is designed to make grass cutting a breeze. The L-shaped design enables a mower to run true along the lawn border, enabling grass to be cut clean against the edge without leaving a line for which a strimmer would be required, meaning lawn care is easier than ever!

Each border comes complete with spikes for installation, and the flexible recycled rubber material – like all of Primeur’s EZ Borders - can curve to fit the shape of your border. The Mower Edge Border will take pride of place on Primeur’s stand and you can also see it on the New Product Showcase in Hall 19.

Newness across the board

Elsewhere at Glee, Primeur’s award-winning Tierra Verde self-watering planter collection will see a new steel grey colourway added to the square Citadelle planter and 15cm trough planter – both designs flying off the shelves during the early 2022 season.

Over in the Easy Tile decking range, new introductions will include extra-large 45x45cm ‘Extreme’ Tiles and 45x45cm Cosmopolitan Decking tiles, plus edging and corners to fit the new extra-large sizes for a seamless fit.

Recycled rubber that won’t let you down

As well as looking great in any garden and giving a great big tick to the eco-friendly box, the recycled tyre crumb material makes Primeur products incredibly flexible and durable (they’re virtually indestructible!), non-toxic, easy to clean and maintain, resistant to mould and mildew, insulating for plant roots during winter, lawnmower and strimmer safe, crack-resistant, UV resistant, lightweight, easy to install and move around in both the garden and retail setting so no more breakage and wastage costs!

Whether you are looking to access AMES UK’s portfolio of leading heritage brands, or keen to learn more about how this industry goliath can help you differentiate your retail offering, there are a million reasons why a visit to AMES’ Glee stand (6C40-F41) will pay dividends. Here are 10 to entice you:

1. Ringing the Changes

There have been some big changes at AMES UK over the past few years. Whilst we’ve tried to communicate with the market as much as possible, we know we haven’t been as vocal as we’d like. Now – 100% confident that the changes we’ve put in place are right and offer real value for our customers – we are ready to reveal all!  The stars have aligned for Glee 2022 to be our platform for relaunching to the industry. It’s a hugely exciting time and we can’t wait to showcase all the hard work, determination and passion that our team has put in to ensure that the AMES UK proposition is stronger than ever.

The full team will be out in force at Glee – with both new and familiar faces – where we will be eager to meet new and existing customers and to talk you through the full AMES UK portfolio.

2. First time under one roof

Not only is Glee 2022 the first time the full AMES UK team will be out in force, but it also marks the very first time that our entire brand portfolio – including Kelkay, Apta and La Hacienda - will be displayed in one convenient location.

3. Dive into decorative aggregates

Our leading heritage brand, Kelkay, will be taking centre stage at Glee 2022, with one third of the stand given over to this hugely popular offering. The full Kelkay portfolio has been revised to create a more comprehensive price hierarchy, backed by trend-led designs, new additions across decorative aggregates, paving and horticulture grits and new merchandising solutions that offer best-in-class retailing solutions. We’ve no doubt that this professionally curated offering will provide maximum profitability for retailers, whether they’re new to aggregates or highly experienced.

4. Pots for profit

The Apta brand will undergo a renaissance at Glee 2022. New models open up exciting sales growth opportunities, whilst AMES’ exclusive designs will highlight how innovation is still very much alive within the pot and planter category. Apta’s garden décor will also be on display, with core, bestselling lines clearly identified to enable retailers to ‘plug and play’ with products that consumers will want to spend on.

5. Heat up sales in 2023

Whether fire, heating or cooking, new additions and bestselling ranges from La Hacienda will be on display throughout the AMES UK stand, showcasing how garden updates and outdoor living are literally on fire! The 2023 La Hacienda offering is designed to align with key trends and wider product ranges to optimise sales and increase the average basket spend through ‘create the look’ shopping. Water features will complete the showcase from this iconic brand, perfect for developing an outdoor décor offering which, when on display in store, will set retailers apart from their competition.

6. New products to drive sales

Whilst much of our presence at Glee is focused on updating the market on the steps we’ve taken to ensure we remain the partner of choice for so many retailers, new product development has not been forsaken. As range reviews have taken place and gaps identified, our in-house product teams have been passionate about creating and sourcing new styles, shapes, colours - or new innovations entirely - to ensure the AMES UK offering is stronger than ever. 48 new products totalling several hundred new SKUs will officially debut at Glee, including some AMES exclusives which are set to shake up traditional product categories and drive consumer spend in 2023 and beyond.

7. Exclusive insight into the latest trends

Whichever direction you enter the AMES UK stand from you will be greeted by a special ‘trend garden’ created by our design studio. Located on each of corners these four unique gardens will showcase the key trends that are impacting consumer spend and shaping product sales. From Urban Utopia to Superbloom, the gardens will demonstrate how AMES UK’s three heritage brands can be cross merchandised to inspire consumers to create the look, resulting in an increased average basket spend.

8. First look at new merchandising solutions

Dedicated to wanting to make selling AMES UK products and ranges easier than ever, Glee 2022 will also mark the debut of several new merchandising solutions, including a new concept to drive seasonal sales and offer greater pricing flexibility for retailers.

9. 2023 stock is good to go

At AMES UK we are confident that the future is bright, with growth for both ourselves and our customers forecast for 2023. Join us on our stand to discover more about the steps we have taken to ensure supply and product consistency through significant investment in production, bagging and logistic facilities. With much of 2023 stock already on the ground at AMES UK’s locations across the UK, there has never been a better time to become part of our next chapter.

10. Access 500+ years of experience

If you are a retailer that values experience and knowledge, then the AMES UK team is hard to beat. A recent add-up resulted in us realising that the combined AMES UK sales team has over 500 years of experience of the garden retail and sales market. Growing greener with Apsley Farms’ Natural Plant Food

Apsley Farms’ Natural Plant Food provides outstanding nutritional support for plants, but with a minimal environmental footprint...

All gardeners want bigger, healthier, and better-yielding plants. But how can they get maximum growth and be kind to the environment?

Apsley Farms’ Natural Plant Food is the solution many are looking for. Our new formulation provides outstanding nutritional support for plants, but with a minimal environmental footprint.

Our liquid plant food is derived entirely from plant material, using the natural process of anaerobic digestion. It’s produced during manufacture of green biomethane from crops, a low carbon process that currently heats 8,500 homes — as well as providing sustainable electricity for the UK grid.

Natural Plant Food is certified for organic use by the Soil Association, and, of course, it’s provided in a recyclable bottle, made from 100% recycled materials.

What this all adds up to is a truly sustainable way of feeding plants which also supports green energy production.

“That’s great news — but does it actually work?”

Yes! Natural Liquid Plant Food has been extensively tested and shown to support plant growth, vitality, and yield. As our customers testify, it provides everything gardeners want from a great quality plant food.

Award winning Bloomin Amazing has quickly become established as the UK’s best-selling digestate soil conditioner and mulch, and it features in GTN Bestsellers week in, week out.

For a small business that was set up only 4 years ago, that’s quite an achievement. To maintain their impressive growth, Bloomin Amazing have recently invested significantly in new technology for their filling and bagging line with the aim of making the whole process even faster and more efficient.

Nick Finding, Managing Director says, “We’ve decided that the best way to grow our business is to focus on doing one thing really well. By concentrating on a single product, our 50L bag of soil conditioner and mulch, we have been able to build and hold really substantial stock levels. At any time, we now hold hundreds of pallets in stock to cope with the unpredictable peaks in demand. The team are achieving next day delivery on our minimum 7 pallet order for 80% of orders.”

Bloomin Amazing has proven to give gardeners great results with many reporting more vigorous growth in vegetables and abundant flowers in herbaceous and bedding plants. Because the product comes from a consistent source with only green crops used in its manufacture, gardeners can guarantee the same great results every time. That’s clearly building a reliable and loyal following amongst consumers which is, in turn, driving brand value and repeat sales.

Brothers taking Deco-Pak into its next chapter

Family-run decorative aggregate business, Deco-Pak has seen a changing of the guard, as brothers Craig and David Hall further take the reins at this thriving business. Here, they tell us more about their plans for the future of Deco-Pak...

Family-run decorative aggregate business, Deco-Pak has seen a changing of the guard, as brothers Craig and David Hall further take the reins at this thriving business. Here, they tell us more about their plans for the future of Deco-Pak.

Craig and David aren’t new faces at Deco-Pak, having worked at the company for many years, but their new roles, as Marketing Director and Commercial Director, respectively, place them both front and centre. Supported by General Manager, Rod Slater, Craig and David are now responsible for all areas of the day-to-day running of the business, as well as marketing, sales support, POS and merchandising displays, exhibitions and brand positioning, Craig and David have packed daily schedules, as they work to create a bright future for the company.

Shaping Deco-Pak with creativity

Founded in 2004 as a reincarnation of a previous family-business, Cem-Pak, Deco-Pak has come a long way over the past 18 years, most notably expanding its product portfolio from just 10 lines in 2004 to more than 500 by 2022.

Adding a creative twist to Deco-Pak’s offering is what is shaping much of Craig’s forward planning. He explained: “Deco-Pak has become synonymous with all things hard landscaping, including decorative aggregates, paving, water features and rockery essentials; and this will always remain. However, we want to look at the category with fresh eyes to identify new opportunities and product introductions that enhance our offering and increase consumer engagement across all consumer demographics.

“Ultimately, we want to positively disrupt the norms of the industry and to open up new conversations regarding sustainability and how we, as a supplier, are responding and adapting to ensure longevity for ourselves, our retailers, and the garden landscaping sector.

“We have some really exciting plans for the next two-to-three years and know that the changes we are going to make will represent a key milestone for both Deco-Pak and the wider aggregates sector.”

Honouring the legacy

Of course, the future of Deco-Pak is only possible due to the legacy that the business already has, built up by Craig and David’s own father, Michael, and in more recent years, by Rod Slater also. Talking about this, David said: “Building on the legacy that our father has built is vitally important to us, and we will work hard to ensure that his vision and that of Rod’s are at the forefront of our minds.

“We have been incredibly lucky to have been instilled with the right morals and a grounded work ethic to succeed in business and this industry. We are very proud of our heritage as a business and the foundations we have in place that enable us to push forward. We hope that our family values of togetherness and having a positive outlook on every situation shines through in what we do, and that our obsession for the finer detail also pays dividends for our customers.”

Navigating the pandemic & beyond

Having grown up in this industry and faced the normal challenges that come from running a business, Craig and David began their new chapter at the helm of Deco-Pak during one of the most volatile periods, the pandemic.

Despite the endless challenges that were thrown at the entire garden retail supply chain during this time, Deco-Pak witnessed unprecedented growth. A lot of this success is attributed to the incredible team in place, as Craig explained: “I have no doubt that we have been able to weather the storm thanks to two things: a solid foundation to build from, and a truly dedicated team. Everyone within the Deco-Pak family pulled together to ensure that we continued to fulfil orders, whilst also continuing to focus on vital new product development. They did whatever was needed to help us not only survive but to thrive – and, for that, we are forever grateful. Without them, we would not have achieved our home delivery service so quickly or diversified into growing media, as we now have. Our team has faced huge uncertainty and used it to create exciting and profitable opportunities.”

Deco-Pak in 2022

Six months into 2022 and Deco-Pak has already had an extremely busy year. Next up will be the annual Glee exhibition (28th – 30th June) which will see the company, led by Craig, David and Rod, launch new water features and showcase its now enhanced ‘retail theatre’ merchandising innovations that are expertly designed to help consumers ‘create the look’ through informative and aspirational point of sale material.

A barista will also be on hand throughout the show to help further fuel conversations, plus visitors will be treated to a sneak peek at Deco-Pak’s plans for increasing the business’ stance on sustainability, which will also be on display.

Plastics and recyclables

Town & Country has launched a Planter range to make it easier for everyone to feel the benefits of nurturing and growing plants, even those with small balconies or courtyards with the launch of the Tiered planter range, allowing new and keen gardeners to take planting to the next level and grow up. They provide a great way people to mix and match plants for dramatic, or complementary effect within the separate tiers, meaning gardeners with any size outdoor space can essentially create an entire garden in a small area, simply by planting up. Alongside the tiered planters Town & Country are launching an expanded range of planters including a beehive shape, square and trough planters in several sizes to give end user to the right choice for them.

The UK, recycled material made and 100% recyclable planters, benefit from integrated drainage holes to ensure plants don’t sit in water-logged soil following heavy rain or an over-enthusiastic watering session.

To support the sell through and to expand the key message of planting up, both planters can be displayed in two display Free Standing Display Units.

The small version holds 50 of the tiered planters and the large display holds 40 planters per display. They are informative and eye catching, depicting the many uses from strawberry planters, herbs and flowers to succulents and the ever-wonderful chilli plants.

Wood Splitter Kindling Cracker comes to UK

At Fandango Fire Tools we’re very excited. That’s because we’ve brought the Kindling Cracker™ to the UK...

At Fandango Fire Tools we’re very excited. That’s because we’ve brought the Kindling Cracker™ to the UK.

The Kindling Cracker is the patented, cast iron, Australian made wood splitter. Users love that it is safe and easy to use.

It was invented by New Zealand schoolgirl Ayla almost 10 years ago. We're very proud to help spread her story around Europe.

We started selling the Kindling Cracker in the UK in November 2021. This was after huge success in mainland Europe. We’ve been selling over 50,000+ per year there for the last five years.

We’re delighted with the reception in GB. We've sold over 6,500 in the UK since we opened our Manchester warehouse. Customers seem to love their Kindling Crackers!

There has been an increase in homeowners looking to wood as a fuel source. The outdoor living boom means more gardens have fire pits, pizza ovens, wood fired hot tubs and grills. Rising energy prices have seen more homeowners install log burners indoors.

There are more applications for firewood in the UK home than ever before.

In May 2021 the legislation around the moisture content of firewood that can be sold changed. Homeowners should be aware of the legislative changes. The sale of wet wood (where moisture content is over 20%) was banned.

Fuel that isn’t dried is particularly bad for the environment. Burning dry wood is far less polluting. Less nasty particulate matter is released into the atmosphere.

Oh, and it takes a lot of thermal energy to boil off the moisture in wood – energy that could be heating your home!

The Kindling Cracker lets you prepare this wood at home. Safe. Easy. Smart.

The new cover range extends the company’s popular Super Tough covers which have only been available in green in the past.  Now the entire range will be available in black in order to make them well-suited to modern furniture trends and colours.  The covers are part of Garland’s entry level cover range but are still covered by the company’s market-leading 5-year guarantee.  There are 44 covers in the range, offering the ultimate protection for garden furniture, barbecues and outdoor heaters.

New extra value packs that include screw eyes, vine eyes, wire fleece and fabric pegs have been added to Garland’s garden basics range.  The new packs will enable consumers to purchase bigger and better value packs, making them particularly suitable for larger gardening jobs.

Garland’s plant support trellis range comprising three designs was first introduced at Glee last year and due to its popularity, the company has added a fourth design.  The new leaf design trellis will be available in the same four sizes as the current range.

Completing Garland’s new products’ launch is a budget friendly Black XL High Dome Propagator that is being introduced as a result of considerable customer demand.  The large propagator has a lower price point, enabling garden centres to offer their customers a great value promotion, whilst not affecting their core range and sales.

Later this year will see Garland’s new £160,000 software system go live.  The system comprises the most state of the art warehouse management software that will lead to faster order processing and deliveries.  The company has also launched a new website with a dedicated trade online ordering facility.

Award winning products from clever pots

Find out why these propagation products are clever at Glee Birmingham Show, Hall 6 Stand A60...

It’s not long until the doors open at Glee tomorrow and the clever pots team have been busy preparing the stand since Sunday, ready to welcome everybody to Glee across the next 3 days.

The clever pots range of pots and accessories make growing in pots easier for both the novice and experienced gardener, whatever the size of the outdoor space.

Clever pots products support the whole growing season, from propagation to plant care and are UV colour stable, so the colours don’t fade, and are made from 20-60% recycled plastic.

Let's talk about propagation.  Although most seedlings have been planted out this season, growing and nurturing seeds are a key concern for any gardener. Clever pots propagators and easy release pots can help.

The clever pots propagator creates the ideal environment for growing seeds into healthy seedlings.  Some of the features and benefits include:

  • visible water level in the base of the propagator to prevent over or under watering, there's no need to remove the lid.
  • vented air flow on the lid
  • condensation can be channelled back into the base tray.
  • handles for easy transportation.

We’re delighted that earlier this year clever pots easy release pots were awarded an iF Design Award.  The clever pots easy release pots features are thoughtfully designed by our own inhouse designers and garden experts.    Each easy release pot has a flexible ribbed base to release fragile seedlings without root damage, as well as a textured finish to write on the pots.  The easy release pots are reusable and made with recycled plastic.  Available in packs of 5 in 4 different sizes and 2 saucer sizes.

Come and talk to us at Glee about the clever pots range of products and find out more.  You’ll find clever pots in Hall 6 Stand A60.

Having launched a series of very successful decorative aggregate blends over the past five years and having seen a high proportion of these products feature in the top ten sellers, the company continues to expand and enhance its product offering.  Exclusive products make up an impressive 30% of their range and have been the main element in facilitating the company’s rapid growth over the past 18 months.

With two new ranges set to be unveiled on their stand as follows:

New Large Bag Alpine Collection

Their successful Alpine Crated Collection, of six premium miniature gravels, is set to be replicated into their large bag range and supplied in full colour, metallic packaging.  Featuring four premium European miniature gravels and two UK sourced favourites the collection brings together both contemporary and traditional tastes, so is set to appeal to a wide customer base.

Annual sales of smaller graded gravels are on the increase, particularly as these more effectively complement the modern and contemporary aesthetics of porcelain paving which is becoming increasingly more popular.

Following awards at RHS Chelsea 2020, GLEE 2019 and at the Garden Retail Awards 2015, 2016 and 2017,  The Patio Black Spot Removal Company Ltd has become synonymous with the Garden Retailing market as a manufacturer of Premium garden stone cleaning products, producing stunning results, within a matter of hours.

Their flagship product range , the three different Patio Black Spot Removers, have been further improved by the addition of  Unique Euchan2® Technology.

Based on the addition of Euchalyptus, its interaction ensures that the Lichen absorb the solution completely.

Thus , by penetrating the root, which anchors the Lichen to the stone, this releases their limpet-like adhesion, allowing both the surface, and subsurface growth to be easily removed, without damaging the stone, using water to irrigate the dead root from the surface.

Removing the root prevents the regrowth of the black lichen spots, removing the need to retreat the area.

This new technology separates The Patio Black Spot Removal System , completely,  from other patio cleaners, currently available,  for the following reasons:

  • It doesn’t rely on acid burning or bleaching of the surface ,or the use of pesticides. The former will dissolve limestone and stain sandstone orange, not to mention destroying surrounding plants
  • As the product does all the work, it reduces the need to over pressure wash, thus reducing damage to surface of the stonework.
  • Multi-layers of both black lichen and white fungi , that have accumulated over 70 or 80 years, can be readily removed.
  • By reducing the reliance on pressure washing, the system increases the longevity of garden stonework, preserving both the appearance and the value of investment.

Award-winning home décor brand, Primus, is set to unveil its largest collection of new products at Glee.  A whopping 115 new products over 14 ranges will be exclusively unveiled and which promise to be the home and garden ‘must-haves’ not just for the coming season, but for years to come.

Responding to demand, Primus is delighted to reveal the new addition to its much-loved Wallace & Gromit range with a striking new Wallace ornament!  Joining his lovable friend, Gromit and dastardly criminal, Feathers, the new ornament completes the Aardman range which is now also available in a smaller size.  The smaller option of sculptures offers an attractive price point for the collection which is perfect for both indoor and outdoor use.

Building on the success of its Christmas vintage collection, a lighthouse, 2 pillar boxes and 17 vintage vehicles will be powering full steam ahead into this brand-new range.  From the iconic black cabs and red buses of London to the symbolic aircraft from World War II and modern-day popcorn carts, all of these ornaments come individually gift boxed in 100% plastic free packaging.

Perfect for families of all ages, the animal collections have grown and the introduction of a Goofasuarus range of 7 dinosaurs and 7 Forest Friends are the perfect metal garden sculptures for children.

Following the ‘metal’ theme, a completely new range of metal wall signs will hang proud in any garden, man cave or home pub!  All designed in-house, the eclectic signs bring fun, humour and even retro so there is a sign guaranteed to suit all personalities and garden settings.

From ‘time to time’ we get inspiration from existing items and Primus is proud to unveil its brand-new range of outdoor wall clocks that use the stunning silhouette wall art concept as the face.  All silhouette wall clocks are individually packaged in retail friendly open face packaging and are suitable for outdoor and indoor use.

Steve Perry, Marketing Director for Primus said: “Completing the ‘Pride of Primus’ items for Glee is an extension to existing ranges we know our customers already love which we hope will be welcome news for stockists.  With more silhouette wall art, garden mirrors and animal sculptures to showcase, we are confident that the team has nailed the offering once again and we can’t wait to see everyone at Glee to tour the stand together where you will get a real feel for the quality and attention to detail, we are so fiercely proud of.”

Standalone PoS makes it ‘EASY’ for garden centre retailers

As DIYers look to make the most of their gardens this summer and spruce up their tired looking garden sheds and outbuildings, Onduline is helping retailers to make that as ‘easy’ as possible by creating an attractive free standing display showcasing its popular EASYLINE roofing sheets.

Complete with accessories and fixings, it is ideal for garden centre and other leisure retailers.

At 100cm by 76cm, EASYLINE is a compact roofing system that is perfect for sheds, studios, pet shelters and other garden buildings and annexes.

Easy to stock, easy to transport and easy to install

As a retail-friendly standalone pallet, it is simple to stock on a shop floor or in a trade store, and the EASYLINE sheets are lightweight and can be easily fitted into the boot of a typical family car.

EASYLINE, which can be seen on the Onduline stand (7F42) is available in several bright colours and compares favourably to traditional shed felt thanks to its 10-year waterproofing guarantee and ease of installation.

Each sheet is made of 50% to 60% recycled fibres and contains no hazardous substances, making it completely safe for people and family pets.

Nisha Kumar, Head of Marketing for Onduline Building Products, said: “DIY is still extremely popular, and with summer on the horizon, homeowners are looking at how they can revamp their outdoor space and refurbish that tired old shed which is letting the garden down. We’re keen to provide retailers with a solution that makes it easy to increase sales and give the purchasers what they want, and EASYLINE does just that.”

The display also includes a QR code that, when scanned, leads the customer to a simple-to-follow installation video.

New from Harmony Gardens

After an incredibly successful launch last year, including two awards at Glee – Best New Growing Media Product and the Glee Sustainability Award – Southern Trident is doubling the range of products in the Harmony Gardens portfolio...

After an incredibly successful launch last year, including two awards at Glee – Best New Growing Media Product and the Glee Sustainability Award – Southern Trident is doubling the range of products in the Harmony Gardens portfolio.

The new products are Fruit & Vegetable Compost, Farmyard Manure, Chipped Bark and Ericaceous Compost – always every compost producer’s trickiest type of peat-free compost to formulate – but Southern Trident has done it!

The entire range, which also contains Multipurpose Compost, Growbag, Top Soil and Soil Improver, is 100% peat free, only contains environmentally-responsible sourced recycled raw materials and by-products from other industries. The coir used has Soil Association accreditation, and Harmony Gardens is the world’s first carbon neutral growing media brand. That’s definitely something to shout about to your customers when you stock the Harmony Gardens range.

The attractive packaging creates stand-out displays for stockists and contains clear messaging and information. It shows the Peat Free, Carbon Neutral, Soil Association and Responsible Sourcing Scheme for Growing Media (RSSGM) – of which Southern Trident is a founding member – messages. Unlike most other suppliers, we clearly explain exactly which peat-free constituents it contains and their benefits, where and how to use the product and, in the case of composts, how many containers it will fill.

As part of our sustainable Green Today, Greener Tomorrow philosophy, the bags are made from at least 30% recycled plastic and are 100% recyclable where local authority facilities exist to accommodate recyclable plastics.

The newly launched, Harmony Gardens website – harmonygardens.uk – contains details of the range, has a stockist locator so that consumers can find their local garden centre supplier and fully explains our carbon neutral and peat-free status.

STV offers huge growth in online pest control sales

STV have unveiled the results of a £500k investment in the development of a multi-channel retail solution for their market-leading The Big Cheese pest control range.

The project is designed to help bricks and mortar businesses benefit from the huge growth in online pest control sales. With as many as 50% of DIY pest control sales beginning with a click, it’s an opportunity that’s too important to miss.

The promise from The Big Cheese is ‘Pest Control Problem Solved’. Their exciting new retail merchandising solution means that the customer journey starts in store with a dynamic new display for the top 100 best-selling products. To help consumers to select the best product for their needs, the unit includes an easy-to-use smart phone product selector - it’s never more than three clicks to solving the problem! Users can then pick up the recommended solution from the fixture, or order from their phone to click and collect or have it home delivered in 24 hours.

A much broader selection of product can be made available from the point of sale in this way, with the retailer continuing to receive commission, even on sales of product that are delivered direct to the customer! The system is driven by the new website www.tbcandme.com and supported with an extensive library of informative ‘bite size’ videos to help consumers choose and use the best product. These are also linked directly back to on pack QR codes too.

STV are now seeking local independent retailers with whom they can partner on a regional basis – appointed Top100 stockists will benefit from the unique drop ship service from STVs own fulfilment centre and earn commission on these and all sales through www.tbcandme.com in their region.

The new Top100 stand will be show on STV’s stand 19E40

Glee in June – everything you need to know

This year marks an exciting new chapter for Glee as, following a period of extensive research and consultation, and in a move designed to better support the evolving needs of the garden retail sector, the 2022 event will take place in late June (28th-30th, NEC Birmingham)...

Throughout its 45+ year history, Glee – the UK’s largest and most prestigious garden trade event – has taken place in September. However, 2022 marks an exciting new chapter for the exhibition as, following a period of extensive research and consultation, and in a move designed to better support the evolving needs of the garden retail sector, the 2022 event will take place in late June (28th-30th, NEC Birmingham).

Here, the Glee organisers explains the reasons behind why the gardening industry will be congregating in high summer.

A new chapter for Glee in 2022

There is no question that the events of the last few years have cemented changes in the way we shop, which, in turn, has changed the way retailers look to onboard new and existing product orders. Demand for gardening products and associated sundries has grown exponentially, with two key sales periods being clearly identified – February to June, and September to December. Wanting to remain responsive to these changes has led Glee to a period of significant consultation, the results being one of the biggest changes that Glee has made for many years – a move to late June.

Better situated within changing buying cycles

Glee in June offers better synergies with buying cycles. With longer lead times – up to 12 months in advance - shaping professionalised buying practices, this change in the timing of Glee will provide improved access to products that meet peak seasonal sales demand and will enable retailers to forecast and manage these peak periods more confidently.

Of those consulted, over 57% stated that lead times have extended significantly, making September too late to complete comprehensive buying for the year ahead. With a June date, retailers can undertake all their buying under one roof, minimising time spent on the road visiting showrooms, whilst also working with live data resulting from quarter one financial assessment and monthly range performance assessment, something that over 66% of those consulted confirmed they now undertake.

The centre of the events calendar

Glee’s new date looks to also position the show more centrally within the wider exhibition cycle. Glee’s late June timing make it easier for many companies to exhibit at the NEC, by spring boarding from complementary events earlier in the calendar. The benefit for visiting retailers is that they will have even more choice and access to brands that they may not otherwise see. What’s more, access to Glee is improved for international visitors already on the exhibition trail in mainland Europe.

Leaving space for Christmas

With Christmas driving the forward focus in September for many retailers, Glee moving out of this crucial space will enable retailers to concentrate on the key sales period like never before, safe in the knowledge that their spring and summer orders are in place and stock is winging its way to them when it is needed most.

Maximising DIY, grocery and home & gift sales opportunities

The benefit of Glee’s realigned timing is also well supported by suppliers, with 72% of those exhibitors consulted wholly supporting the move. June aligns with the supplier sell-in period to DIY and grocery accounts, whilst enabling an extended consultation period with garden centres. A move to earlier in the year also offers improved growth opportunities for home and gift retailers who want to maximise Christmas sales.

Gardenex will again be hosting the International Buyers' Centre at Glee, which takes place at the NEC Birmingham, starting tomorrow (Tuesday, June 28).

The International Buyers' Centre can be found in Hall 7, stand E80, where Gardenex will provide business support to the international buyers visiting the show. The Federation will also look forward to welcoming both members and potential members to the Centre to provide export advice and market information.

Gardenex has been actively encouraging international buyers to visit the show and some will be participating in introductory meetings with Glee exhibitors through the initiative International Buyers' Connect. These meetings are free, but subject to a selection process by the buyer.

Gardenex members have been the first to receive the profiles of the companies participating so that they can apply for meetings at the show but please note, they are only open to Glee exhibitors. Each session, lasting 10 minutes, will take place at the International Buyers' Centre.

The buyers have selected the suppliers they wish to meet based on the company website content and on their own product priorities and Gardenex has co-ordinated the meetings.

For the companies that are selected, it is a good opportunity to meet with key international distributors and retailers of garden products, and the buyers have the chance to visit your stand following the introductory meetings.

PetQuip will also be operating an industry information stand (7A33) within the PAW section of Glee and looks forward to seeing member companies and potential members there.

Get ready for Fire, Grill & Chill at Glee 2022

The new Fire, Grill & Chill area is dedicated to demonstrating the best that Glee’s Outdoor Entertainment exhibitors have to offer...

If you sneak a peek at the long-term weather forecast you might see a glint of sunshine on the horizon for the first-ever June edition of Glee (28th – 30th June, NEC Birmingham) - no doubt music to the ears of Glee’s organising team who are currently finalising details for its new Fire, Grill & Chill area, which is dedicated to demonstrating the best that Glee’s Outdoor Entertainment exhibitors have to offer.

Located at the rear of Hall 20, this new-for-2022 area will see leading brands such as Landmann, Kadamo Joe, Fandango Fire Tools, Cheeky Charlie Oven Company, Northwest Asia and Kadai come together to showcase their latest barbecues, grills and pizza ovens. This mouth-watering display is set to open up new exhibiting opportunities for outdoor entertainment brands, and to showcase products in a way never before seen at a trade exhibition of this kind.

Joining in the fun will be some special additions, including a drinks truck, ice cream van and daily live music and DJ sets to help add to the summer vibes.

The annual ‘Glee Party’ will also be hosted within this new area on June 28th at 5pm, with exhibitors and show visitors invited to join together for some more informal networking opportunities.

Talking about Fire, Grill & Chill, Glee’s Event Director, Matthew Mein said: “Traditionally at Glee, outdoor entertaining brands have been able to display their products on stand but being able to fire them up to truly show what they are capable of has always been more of a logistical challenge. Gone are those days however, as our new June timing enables us to make the most of the warmer summer weather and take these demonstrations to the great outdoors, enabling retail buyers to truly understand the functionality of the products on offer. What’s more, Fire, Grill & Chill will provide a unique and fun way for the garden retail community to come together to network whilst at Glee. We’re excited to see our vision become a reality at the show!”

Entry is free of charge to all pre-registered visitors. Register here: https://www.gleebirmingham.com/visitor-registration

Can you afford to miss the Glee Green Heart?

The horticultural hub of Glee, the Green Heart is THE place to see the latest indoor and outdoor plant varieties from a range of leading growers...

The horticultural hub of Glee, the Green Heart is THE place to see the latest indoor and outdoor plant varieties from a range of leading growers.

An integral part of the show each year, the central atrium location makes Glee Green Heart one of the best attended parts of the show, as buyers and owner/operators from across the garden retail sector flock to this dedicated showcase to optimise the ever-growing popularity of green living.

Get ready for bulging order books

Taking place in late June (Tuesday 28th – Thursday 30th), Glee 2022 and the Green Heart are set to benefit from increased transactions taking place, as buyers confirm the importance of placing orders at this time of year. What’s more, with houseplants continuing to drive sales and capture a new gardening audience – latest Euromonitor International data shows houseplants saw the biggest year-on-year sales uplift at 25% - there has never been a more important time to ensure your latest houseplant offering is front and centre.

With order books poised to be filled, the show organisers have made it easier than ever to be part of this must-see section of Glee. All participants have access to high-quality merchandising display units, providing them with a blank page for displaying their latest varieties and showcasing the trends that will shape the 2023 season. As taking part within the Glee Green Heart is also heavily subsidised, participating growers can access Glee’s unrivalled audience without the expense so often associated with trade events, there is still some space available to exhibit  . Like all exhibitors, those in the Green Heart can also enjoy an unrivalled portfolio of marketing, PR and social media support, helping to announce their presence to thousands of horticultural buyers.

Showcase your best side

The light filled atrium space allows all plants to be displayed at their best, with a dedicated Green Heart ‘Best Merchandising’ award adding a touch of friendly competition. Last year the award was won by Hills Plants, which not only made its debut at Glee but at exhibitions in general.

Talking at the awards ceremony in 2021, Hills Plants’ Assistant Production Manager, Laura Marner, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive the award. It means so much to get this kind of recognition, especially during our debut year at Glee, and it has certainly helped us to generate conversation with those retailers that have visited the Green Heart.”

It wasn’t just Hills Plants that recognised the value of the Green Heart. New Leaf Plants called the 2021 event its ‘best-ever Glee’, whilst Golden Grove Nursery, a Glee exhibitor for over 30 years, saw new and existing customers, all of whom placed orders for the year ahead.

Matthew Mein, Glee Event Director, said: “The Green Heart is a really important part of Glee and is designed to put plants right at the centre of the show but, more than this, we want to arm retailers and growers with a platform to communicate – whether in regard to what’s new or how to better drive sales in-store.

“After a significant period of growth for plants, this year’s Glee Green Heart will be more vital than ever. This year’s event will provide plant suppliers and growers with a cost-effective solution for showcasing their latest ranges, to owners and buyers from an unrivalled selection of UK-based independent garden retail businesses, as well as from many of the chains, multiple groups and complementary garden retailers.”

Plants will also be celebrated through Glee’s New Product Showcase with the dedicated Garden Plants, Seeds and Bulbs award, which last year was scooped by MNP Flowers and its Granvia® Pink Flame Imp – a crispy Xerochrysum.

Europe comes to Glee 2022

This year’s edition of Glee will be home to the show’s biggest contingent of global brands since 2019, bringing together a spectacular showcase of European design and a window into how gardening is developing in international markets.

Leading the way will be the Netherlands contingent. Featuring a host of prominent Dutch gardening brands alongside emerging names, this strong international launchpad will rival mainland European events which often play host to these bellwether companies. Look out for Elho, Kaemingk, Capi Europe, Kapiteyn B.V., Edelman, Madison B.V., Impulse Plants B.V., Bonfeu, JAVADO, 200 Fahrenheit, Plenty Gifts, Green Inspiration Plants, and Smiemans Projecten B.V.

French suppliers, including Forest Style SAS (Soulet / Cerland), Vertiable SAS, Paysagea SAS and Hareau (Weenect), will similarly see their exhibition presence increase thanks to Glee’s new partnership with Team France Export, Business France and the Choose France™ initiative, which has been set up to shine the spotlight on the uniqueness of French design to a wider global audience.

Also, joining the Glee 2022 exhibitor line up will be key suppliers from Germany - including Scheurich and Burstenhaus Redecker Gmbh - as well as Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Moldova, Norway and Poland, completing the European lineup. Canada, India, Korea and a small Chinese delegation will similarly be showcasing new products and services from these unique consumer markets.

Matthew Mein, Glee Event Director, said: “It’s great to see so many more European and global brands joining us at Glee this June. There is no question that our new dateline position has opened up the potential of Glee to a much wider audience, enabling them to access Glee’s platform at a more convenient time within the buying and events calendar.

“We’re excited to host these important brands onsite at the NEC and welcoming back a selection of leading European companies that have not presented their ranges at Glee for some time. I have no doubt that visitors will welcome the variety of products and international trend insight that this portfolio of companies will together provide.”

Glee will welcome a number of new initiatives, all designed to help the show’s exhibitors and visitors to “give back” and protect the planet, reduce waste and raise vital funds for the industry’s charity, Greenfingers.

Grow My Tree

With sustainability no longer an option but an imperative, this year Glee is on a mission to help everyone at the exhibition to fight climate change by planting trees with its official climate partner, Grow My Tree

Every attendee at Glee 2022 will be able to plant a tree free of charge.  Grow My Tree will work in partnership with one of its local operators within the global south (Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania), where the environmental, social and economic leverage is greatest, and the impact of each tree planted will take effect quickest. A code to access this ‘free tree’ offer will be provided to all attendees post-event.

Exhibitors will also be offered the opportunity to purchase up to 440 trees at a discounted rate, helping to offset almost 100% of their annual COemissions* with every tree absorbing upwards of 22kg of CO2 per year. Further details on how to purchase these trees can be found in the E-Zone.

Show your love for Greenfingers

Time to dig out your boldest floral shirt, dainty flowery dress and everything in-between as Floral Thursday is back and ready to raise funds for the Greenfingers charity.

Taking place on Thursday 30th June – the final day of Glee 2022 – Floral Thursday is a special fundraising activity where it is hoped that the thousands of visitors and exhibitors at Glee will come together to show their flower power in aid of Greenfingers’ ongoing fundraising activities. Anyone that has reached for the floral clothing – from ties to socks to shirts and suits – will be invited to purchase a raffle ticket which will enter them into a prize draw to win fabulous prizes whilst, more importantly, helping to top up the annual fundraising total of the children’s hospice garden charity.

Last year, at Glee 2021, Floral Thursday raised over £2,000, and an even larger total is hoped for this year.

Further supporting the Greenfingers charity, entries into the Glee New Products Showcase in 2022 can help to raise much needed funds. Any brand that enters the awards can donate their product sample, where it will be auctioned by Greenfingers’ Bedford-based auction partners, W&H Peacock. Similar auctions have raised thousands for the charity, funds which help Greenfingers to continue to build therapeutic gardens in children’s hospices throughout the country.

Taking steps to reduce waste onsite

Becoming more sustainable is a key part of the development of Glee, which is why the organisers will be working closely with the NEC and all of their suppliers to ensure that steps are taken to reduce the potentially negative environmental impact that each event cycle can have. Guided by the ‘NEC Sustain’ Policy – an all-encompassing sustainability programme that focuses on the different elements that make up the reality of an exhibition including energy, waste and food – Glee will look to minimise everything from a reliance on plastic to introducing more water fountains, and even sourcing catering from local suppliers to minimise food miles.

Glee will also be working with Event Cycle to help exhibitors remove and repurpose any items that otherwise would have been thrown away. Event Cycle help reduce waste from events and create a positive social impact in the process.

Item donated by exhibitors are given to charity and community groups, as well as back into the events industry. Exhibitors can find out more about this initiative by visiting the Exhibitor Manual.

Introducing onsite welfare rooms

New for 2022, anyone present at Glee will be able to access a dedicated onsite welfare room. It will provide a quiet place to take a break or give additional support to anyone that needs it, no matter the reason.

Home, Gift & Clothing

See what the UK’s premier garden centre & gift exhibition has to offer in these crucial market sectors...

Not only have many of the UK’s garden centres become amongst the most successful destination retail outlets in the country, but gift stores have also seen their audience increase as consumers look to source, more than ever, unique and heartfelt gifts for loved ones and to mark special occasions.

As the most important trade event for the gardening, leisure and outdoor living sectors, Glee brings together the whole of these vibrant and eclectic industries under one roof and serves as the central hub for face-to-face trading, networking, and the growth of new ideas across eight dedicated show sectors.

This year Home, Gift & Clothing will take pride of place alongside Garden Care, Landscaping & Garden Decoration, Food & Catering, Retail Experience & Services, Outdoor Entertaining, Plants and PAW (Pet and Animal Wellbeing). This year’s show is set to welcome over 400 exhibitors, of which an estimated 40% never before seen at the show, making this year’s event bigger and more vibrant than before.

Giftware buyers will be able to access a wide range of brands offering everything from outdoor clothing ranges and picnicware to seasonal decorations, games, toys and books, as well as complementary brands and products from Glee’s wider offering. All these brands are keen to do business with gift buyers from both garden centres and gift shops, with a combined offering that is designed to work both this season and beyond, thanks to new dateline which has positioned the show within a more convenient time within the annual buying cycle.

Brands returning to the Home, Gift & Clothing sector will include Woodmansterne with its new plastic-free range of beautiful, artistic greetings cards; APAC, distributor of leading home fragrance brand, Bolsius Candles; sock specialists, HJ HallTilnar Art, which has a beautiful range of environmentally friendly and fairly traded gift and homeware products; and the multi-award-winning publisher, Willsow, with its range of plantable children’s books.

New brands set to make their debut in the Home, Gift & Clothing sector of Glee this year include Vent for Change, with its high profile range of ethical and eco-friendly stationery; organic tea suppliers, English Tea Shop; the sustainable ladies’ fashion experts, M&Co; indoor play specialists, KidzplaySummit/PMS International with an excellent and broad-ranging selection of camping equipment and the biggest publisher of greetings cards in the country - UK Greetings - with its huge range of award-winning greetings cards, gift dressing and social expressions.

This year’s edition of Glee will have a real summer festival feel and promises to be an enjoyable event for visitors, as well as offering a superb product sourcing platform. Making the most of the summer weather will be a new outdoor demonstration area – Fire, Grill & Chill – which will do exactly what the name suggests whilst giving outdoor entertaining brands a chance to show what they’re made of!

As ever, Glee will continue to be a hot bed for all the latest product innovations to hit the market. Whether it’s new additions for the autumn sales period, updates to bestsellers or even trend-led innovation set to shape spend in 2023, Glee will be home to it all. Don’t forget to also make a beeline for the Glee New Product Showcase where the newest inventions and novelties will be on display, providing retailers with unrivalled inspiration and the chance to grab the something unique for their 2023 retail offering.

Making peat free work for everyone - watch video discussion from the Glee studio

In the run up to Glee, GTN's Trevor Pfeiffer hosted a round table discussion in the Glee Studio with Marcus Eyles, Roger Crookes and Adam Wigglesworth about making peat free gardening work for everyone with a special focus on making the most of the opportunities for the future.

“The past is gone,” says Roger. “There's an exciting future ahead. We're not powerless in this. We have huge power to influence and co-operate with this amazing trend. I'm excited.”

Adam says the industry shouldn’t let perfection in gardening get in the way of progress. “We need to go forward and customers want us to do that and they want to do the right thing. We need to facilitate it. We shouldn’t let perfection hold us back.”

Marcus says the industry should now be proactive and has seen it coming together on the peat free issue, which has fast tracked and gained momentum really quickly. “We should be sharing [the issues], discussing them and getting on the front foot rather than being caught lagging behind.”

“We’ve got an opportunity,” says Adam. “Let’s grasp it”.

Glee in conversation with….UK garden centres

Glee catches up with a handful of forward-thinking garden retailers to find out more about how they shop the show. Pictured, from left to right: Boyd Douglas-Davies, Simon Bourne, Ian Richardson and Tammy Woodhouse.

Glee catches up with a handful of forward-thinking garden retailers to find out more about how they shop the show, what they’d like to see more of from exhibitors this year and what impact the new dateline will have on their buying cycles. Pictured, from left to right: Boyd Douglas-Davies, Simon Bourne, Ian Richardson and Tammy Woodhouse.

How do you shop Glee?

British Garden Centre’s Boyd Douglas-Davies certainly gets his steps in and covers some serious ground around the halls. He explains: “Personally, I cover the whole show many times. Last time I checked my pedometer, I was walking over 10 miles a day at the show! For me, the New Product Zone is essential viewing at the start of the show, as it creates the ‘must learn more’ list. As nice as it is to see the tried-and-tested suppliers, it is really important to look at the new exhibitors, as they may hold the key to the future.”

Ian Richardson, Managing Director of Garsons, with centres in Esher and Titchfield, also makes the most of every minute he and his team spend at the show: “I tend to walk the hall, line by line, so I don’t miss anything. We always look at innovation in the New Product area and, if we see anything we like, we make a note to seek them out when we are walking around.”

Simon Bourne, Garden Centre Manager at Perrywood Garden Centre shares his tried-and-tested technique: “We normally visit all of our existing suppliers and spend a differing amount of time with them, depending on what new products they have to show, how they have performed as a supplier and what we are looking to change. We make sure we see as many other suppliers – new and old – as well and will often place orders with companies we haven’t worked with before.”

Keen to be efficient with her time at the show, Tammy Woodhouse, Managing Director at Millbrook Garden Centres says that her team, “goes to Glee with a plan”. She explains: “There are always people we must see, and we do make some appointments. We try to walk every aisle and see everything. It means we don’t miss anything.”

Do you take a large team with you?

“We take as many people as we see necessary, which is quite a large number, but that’s because they're all needed and there's so much to learn,” explains Boyd. “We have buyers and a support team for all categories represented at Glee. Gardening will be there for the duration and even our gift buyer will go for a day.”

Tammy tells us her team will be out in force. “Our buying team is quite small – there’s only three in the team – but, this year, I think there will be seven of us going to the show. We will take the category managers for each department, so they can have an input into the range.

Ian says: “I like to take as many people as possible, so they can see how it’s done. They work with the reps all the time, so it’s nice to get face time with them at the show.”

One thing that retailers are particularly enthused about is the unrivalled opportunity that Glee presents for their buyers to compare offers from a wide range of leading suppliers, with so many key exhibitors together under one roof.

Boyd says: “The way the show is laid out means there is a real comparison opportunity, so you can assess Westland versus Evergreen, for example, then go and take a look at what Vitax is up to. It doesn’t matter how many reps you see regularly; it doesn’t beat being able to hoof it up and down at the show and look at six suppliers, comparing their offer and considering what will sell better in your business. It allows me to really look into the product.”

What do you look out for from exhibitors and is there anything you wish you they would do differently or more of?

Simon Bourne from Perrywood is very clear on this: “Inspiration!” he says. “Packets on a shelf are boring but bring something new to the show and it creates an atmosphere. I love to see plants on a stand too.”

Meanwhile, Boyd believes exhibitors are missing a trick when they have something new and exciting to talk about. “It surprises me when people don’t push ‘new’ as a message. I wish they would all highlight new products on their stand. Also, I’m looking for suppliers to present new ways to increase our sales, which, of course, increases their sales.”

Ian says: “We look out for new or different products, innovation and any new suppliers we don’t already deal with. We’re glad they’re not pushy and don’t grab you in the aisles.”

As well as looking for products to create differentiation, Tammy and the Millbrook team are also seeking products and companies with strong green credentials. She explains: “Increasingly, we are looking for newness and innovation. I know all garden centres go to the show, but it is nice to find something a bit different.

“For us particularly, we are also looking for the sustainability of products. That might be a reduction in packaging, if it is made in the UK, and so on, because these are the questions that we’re getting asked. I think exhibitors could shout about sustainability a bit more. A lot of suppliers are on board with the issue already, but I think there’s loads more we could do, as an industry.”

How important is Glee to your buying cycle each year?

“Very!” says Perrywood’s Simon Bourne, in Tiptree, Essex. “It gives us an opportunity to compare suppliers against each other, check we have the right products and ensure that we have the best mix for our customers.”

Another retailer that places great value on Glee is Boyd Douglas-Davies who enthuses: “For us, it’s the most important show in the year, as it covers so many categories. Over half of our business is garden. We offer other categories, but gardening is still core to our business, and Glee is the number-one show for gardening.”

Ian from Garsons, explains how his team utilises the show. “We use Glee to source new suppliers and also take the time to talk to existing suppliers. Glee is where we do our ranging; we do the research and plan our ranges, then follow up with purchases.”

Tammy Woodhouse echoes the sentiment: “It’s really important. We have always previously waited until Glee to start the ranging process… We try to see everything when we are there, determine what’s new and we then use that as a basis to move forward.”

What do you think of the new June timing of Glee?

“For us, the timing is great because it’s at the end of the season, so you know what sold well and you can make more informed decisions at the show, when all that information is fresh in your mind,” says Ian Richardson

Like Ian, Tammy from Millbrook believes having the show hot on the heels of the season will be beneficial. She says: “In a way, waiting until September was starting to become too late. The good thing is that spring will still be fresh in our mind when we attend in June. It’s how we shop other categories, like Christmas, so could work well.”

She adds: “Also, there are increasing supply chain issues, which mean we are now under growing pressure to order earlier and earlier.

Boyd Douglas-Davies is very positive about the June timing, stating: “I think the move is great. The manufacturing world has changed, and we need to guarantee stock is in front of our customer when they want it. With the increased interest in gardening, the season has extended in both directions, so placing orders earlier is essential. The old Glee was too late for this new world order. June is therefore logical.”
