Primeur reveals double-digit growth in its award-winning Eco Garden range of recycled rubber innovations

In times of economic crisis, business success stories can be few and far between – but one company that is bucking the trend is Primeur, the supplier of award-winning eco-friendly recycled rubber garden innovations. Not only has demand for its product portfolio soared throughout the pandemic, but the business can now reveal double-digit growth in its flagship Eco Garden range.

The Eco Garden line-up, which includes Primeur’s highly acclaimed Tierra Verde self-watering planters, as well as Recycled Rubber Stepping Stones, Deck Tiles and flexible Recycled Rubber Border Collection, has witnessed phenomenal growth during the first eight months of 2020, chalking-up a 62% increase in sales compared to 2019 – and there are still four more months of the year left to go!

To further highlight this incredible achievement, during 2019 Primeur sold 66,161 units, but this year, despite the unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, the company has already sold a staggering 106,974 units; an amazing achievement despite the springtime lockdown which forced garden centres nationwide to remain closed during peak springtime trading season.

The launch of Tierra Verde planters for the 2020 season has powered the Eco Garden range to the next level, with more than 6,000 units already delivered to retailers this year. In response to stockists’ appetite for recycled rubber innovations, Primeur has delivered 197 large stands to retailers during 2020, that will assist retailers in creating high impact merchandising of borders or mixed displays of borders and stepping stones instore.

Primeur’s Jenny Douthwaite said: “Despite one of the toughest environments that the garden retail sector has ever experienced, the exceptional performance of the Eco Garden range is not a coincidence. Long before the pandemic reshaped the retail environment in a way that no-one could ever have predicted, consumers were actively seeking products with true green credentials, and lockdown only served to reinforce the nation’s desire to protect the planet for future generations. With Eco Garden products crafted from recycled rubber tyres, which would have otherwise taken 80 years to decompose if dumped into landfill, the sustainability of recycled rubber garden innovations has clearly resonated with retailers and consumers alike.”

Jenny added: “When you consider that around 5.1 million tonnes of tyres were produced in the EU during 2018, it gives an indication of the scale of the waste problem – but Primeur is currently helping to repurpose more than 5,000,000 tyres every year, and giving these recycled materials a second lease of life in the nation’s gardens. That really is an achievement to be proud of, and one that is making a genuine difference when it comes to protecting the environment.”

While 2020 will go down as a record year for Eco Garden, the seeds of success for the range had been sown – and received prestigious industry recognition – long before the pandemic struck. Primeur’s Tierra Verde Recycled Rubber Planters scooped the coveted Sword of Excellence at the Oscars of the gardening world, the GIMA Awards in 2019, as well as two Glee New Product Showcase awards, while the Roman Stone Border in the company’s Recycled Rubber Border Collection won GIMA’s Landscape Category award in 2018.

In addition, the USPs of recycled rubber products in the Eco Garden collection offer a host of benefits that have driven brand loyalty among consumers. Recycled rubber innovations will not fade, stain, rot or crack – even in the most severe weather extremes, while the material is proven to be mould and mildew-resistant.

The virtually indestructible characteristics of recycled rubber holds benefits for retailers, as products are unlikely to be broken in transit, in warehouses or on the shop floor, slashing wastage bills for stockists, while giving consumers the confidence to use these ultra-tough products in gardens where children and pets play. Plus, as recycled rubber is non-toxic, it’s perfect for use around plants in gardens, on allotments and in play areas, widening the range’s sales appeal, while all products are lawnmower and nylon cord trimmer-safe. As if that wasn’t enough, after one of the driest springs on record, and the August heatwave, the self-watering facility offered by Tierra Verde planters has clearly chimed with time-pressed consumers, who are seeking ways to keep plants alive during periods of hot weather that are becoming commonplace due to climate change, with the frequency of extreme summer temperatures predicted to increase in coming years.

Primeur’s Jenny Douthwaite summed-up: “This year has presented an unprecedented set of challenges and we are proud to have been able to continually supply our online and bricks-and-mortar stockists throughout the pandemic, having secured healthy supplies of stock ready for despatch at the start of the year with plenty of fresh stock available to replenish retailers’ supplies throughout the season. The benefits offered by recycled rubber are making a huge impact throughout the sector and we are confident that demand for environmentally friendly garden products will grow exponentially.”
