Evergreen Garden Care Senior Category Manager, Pery Mitsiou comments: “Listening to the new and developing consumer demands, our aim as innovators in the category is to develop products which meet their needs. Years ago, all-natural gardening wasn’t something considered when launching new products in the garden care industry, or even across the wider market. Whereas now, we are committed to paving the way for our sector with eco-conscious products that meet the needs of growing trends.”

Building on the successful introduction of its striking white and green product packaging, Empathy is rolling out the new look across its entire After Plant bio-fertiliser range, and introducing two new products to buyers for the 2021 season.

The new After Plant for Climbers & Flowering Plants exchanges out the All Purpose version of the company’s granular offering to create a complete plant specific range, thank includes five variations for plants, trees and shrubs.

Designed for plants grown in garden soil, the new addition combines rootgrow™ mycorrhizal fungi and beneficial bacteria to unlock nutrients and provide a sustained food source, supporting them by seeking available nutrients in the soil and enhancing it with beneficial microbes, to produce healthier plants and bigger, more abundant blooms.

A further addition to the range is Bulb Starter with rootgrow™ 250g, designed to give bulbs, corms and tubers the best start possible by introducing and enhancing microbial life in the soil. Primeur reveals double-digit growth in its award-winning Eco Garden range of recycled rubber innovations

In times of economic crisis, business success stories can be few and far between – but one company that is bucking the trend is Primeur, the supplier of award-winning eco-friendly recycled rubber garden innovations. Not only has demand for its product portfolio soared throughout the pandemic, but the business can now reveal double-digit growth in its flagship Eco Garden range...

In times of economic crisis, business success stories can be few and far between – but one company that is bucking the trend is Primeur, the supplier of award-winning eco-friendly recycled rubber garden innovations. Not only has demand for its product portfolio soared throughout the pandemic, but the business can now reveal double-digit growth in its flagship Eco Garden range.

The Eco Garden line-up, which includes Primeur’s highly acclaimed Tierra Verde self-watering planters, as well as Recycled Rubber Stepping Stones, Deck Tiles and flexible Recycled Rubber Border Collection, has witnessed phenomenal growth during the first eight months of 2020, chalking-up a 62% increase in sales compared to 2019 – and there are still four more months of the year left to go!

To further highlight this incredible achievement, during 2019 Primeur sold 66,161 units, but this year, despite the unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, the company has already sold a staggering 106,974 units; an amazing achievement despite the springtime lockdown which forced garden centres nationwide to remain closed during peak springtime trading season.

The launch of Tierra Verde planters for the 2020 season has powered the Eco Garden range to the next level, with more than 6,000 units already delivered to retailers this year. In response to stockists’ appetite for recycled rubber innovations, Primeur has delivered 197 large stands to retailers during 2020, that will assist retailers in creating high impact merchandising of borders or mixed displays of borders and stepping stones instore.

Primeur’s Jenny Douthwaite said: “Despite one of the toughest environments that the garden retail sector has ever experienced, the exceptional performance of the Eco Garden range is not a coincidence. Long before the pandemic reshaped the retail environment in a way that no-one could ever have predicted, consumers were actively seeking products with true green credentials, and lockdown only served to reinforce the nation’s desire to protect the planet for future generations. With Eco Garden products crafted from recycled rubber tyres, which would have otherwise taken 80 years to decompose if dumped into landfill, the sustainability of recycled rubber garden innovations has clearly resonated with retailers and consumers alike.”

Jenny added: “When you consider that around 5.1 million tonnes of tyres were produced in the EU during 2018, it gives an indication of the scale of the waste problem – but Primeur is currently helping to repurpose more than 5,000,000 tyres every year, and giving these recycled materials a second lease of life in the nation’s gardens. That really is an achievement to be proud of, and one that is making a genuine difference when it comes to protecting the environment.”

While 2020 will go down as a record year for Eco Garden, the seeds of success for the range had been sown – and received prestigious industry recognition – long before the pandemic struck. Primeur’s Tierra Verde Recycled Rubber Planters scooped the coveted Sword of Excellence at the Oscars of the gardening world, the GIMA Awards in 2019, as well as two Glee New Product Showcase awards, while the Roman Stone Border in the company’s Recycled Rubber Border Collection won GIMA’s Landscape Category award in 2018.

In addition, the USPs of recycled rubber products in the Eco Garden collection offer a host of benefits that have driven brand loyalty among consumers. Recycled rubber innovations will not fade, stain, rot or crack – even in the most severe weather extremes, while the material is proven to be mould and mildew-resistant.

The virtually indestructible characteristics of recycled rubber holds benefits for retailers, as products are unlikely to be broken in transit, in warehouses or on the shop floor, slashing wastage bills for stockists, while giving consumers the confidence to use these ultra-tough products in gardens where children and pets play. Plus, as recycled rubber is non-toxic, it’s perfect for use around plants in gardens, on allotments and in play areas, widening the range’s sales appeal, while all products are lawnmower and nylon cord trimmer-safe. As if that wasn’t enough, after one of the driest springs on record, and the August heatwave, the self-watering facility offered by Tierra Verde planters has clearly chimed with time-pressed consumers, who are seeking ways to keep plants alive during periods of hot weather that are becoming commonplace due to climate change, with the frequency of extreme summer temperatures predicted to increase in coming years.

Primeur’s Jenny Douthwaite summed-up: “This year has presented an unprecedented set of challenges and we are proud to have been able to continually supply our online and bricks-and-mortar stockists throughout the pandemic, having secured healthy supplies of stock ready for despatch at the start of the year with plenty of fresh stock available to replenish retailers’ supplies throughout the season. The benefits offered by recycled rubber are making a huge impact throughout the sector and we are confident that demand for environmentally friendly garden products will grow exponentially.”

It is time to raise a glass to Specialist Garden Centre Consultancy Pleydell Smithyman. Paul Pleydell and his team are marking 25 years working in partnership with Garden Centres.

From their base in historic Ironbridge, GTN Xtra spoke to Paul about this special anniversary and what it has meant to be part of the development of the industry: “We are looking forward to celebrating this milestone throughout the year, especially the opportunity to say ‘Thank you’ to our team, to our clients, colleagues and friends for a great 25 years.  Indeed, it is our ‘friends’ across this amazing Garden Centre family that have made working in this sector so special.

"GLEE would have been the perfect chance to catch up and say ‘thank you’ to each and every one of you who have been a part of our journey reaching 25.  Sadly, our annual gathering at GLEE won’t be possible this year, but instead we have produced a short video to mark the 25 year occasion and show off the work of our talented and enthusiastic team.”

Watch the video here.

Pleydell Smithyman have been at the forefront of the industry, working with Garden Centres across the UK and further afield, helping them get the best from their businesses & sites.

Paul and his team offer strategic business-led design solutions. Paul explained why Pleydell Smithyman enjoy working in the Garden Centre industry: “I often say we help design businesses not just buildings.  It is very much a ‘people’ business and it has been a true privilege to have worked with so many of you over the years, helping garden centres, both large and small, many who are leaders in the industry, to flourish and adapt to challenges that come along. It’s a thrill knowing we have been part of a creative and successful project, whether achieving a meaningful planning permission, developing a great new building, creating an innovative and successful retail area or restaurant.”

The 25 years have seen many changes.  Paul adds: "Looking back to the days when we wielded the trusted hb pencil and fax machines revolutionised communications (remember those?), just as we’ve embraced computer technology in the way we work today, it has been inspiring working alongside the Garden Centre industry as it has grown, embraced change and innovation, challenged convention, to create the ground-breaking and superb retail experiences we see today” .

We have all faced challenges in recent months, but Paul is thinking about the future: “It’s been great to see the sector rising to meet the unprecedented recent challenges and it has reminded us of what we love about working with garden centres - the way the sector comes together; the speed with which it responds to change; the resilience; the way is supports its customers and staff; I could go on...”

“We’re confident about the future; for example, new changes to the planning system will offer a wide range of opportunities and we’re always looking for new ways we can support our clients to help them build their businesses.”

“We’re going to miss not being at GLEE this year and the opportunity to share great conversation and a cheeky bacon butty over a cup of coffee with friends, old and new, from across the sector.  Most of all we’re going to miss the opportunity to say THANK YOU to you all for 25 great years and the possibility of many more exciting ones ahead.”

Paul and his team may not be at GLEE this year but they are always available to offer advice and support, you can get in touch with them via paul@pleydellsmithyman.co.uk or on 01952 433211.

The pioneering ecofective® range of garden care and plant protection products is to have a fresh new look for 2021 – with supplier Sipcam Home & Garden unveiling a raft of innovative developments that set a new benchmark for sustainable retail.

Aimed at helping retailers target the nation’s increasingly environmentally conscious consumers, the ecofective® rebrand has been designed to deliver clear and consistent messaging about the range’s eco-credentials and will feature a new generation of sustainable packaging. The line-up will also be expanded with the launch of concentrated refill products which hold high appeal with consumers who are keen to reduce their dependency on single-use plastics.

Nigel Thompson, Head of Sales at Sipcam Home & Garden, said: “Research confirmed that the ‘child and pet safe’ message resonates with consumers – it’s critical to driving sales at the point of purchase and that’s why ecofective®’s all-new packaging has been designed to reinforce the message that this range is kinder to the planet, safer for families and good for garden wildlife. The re-brand demonstrates ecofective’s commitment to doing business in a manner that will leave a positive impact on the planet, and that’s why we’re switching to packaging that’s even more sustainable than ever before. Not only will bottles be manufactured from recycled material, but they’re also recyclable, as are the triggers and caps.”

Ahead of the 2021 season, Sipcam Home & Garden is set to launch a number of concentrated refill products which will serve to further reduce plastic waste. The refill range will be available in ecofective®’s Pour + Feed, Bug + Mildew Control, Bug Control, and Rose Defender products.

Customer Experience: Engaging a new generation of customers.

Many garden centres have struggled to authentically connect with new generations of gardeners.  Covid-19 in many cases has opened the door to a new generation of consumers who are growing for the first time.

The key question is how you can connect with them in a way that encourages them to come into store.

Join us for this discussion as we talk about how to harness the power of online channels to drive customers to you, and what are the tips and tricks for improving in-store visual merchandising, to encourage basket size and dwell time?

The Great British Growing Awards...

The Great British Growing Awards.

Grow Your Own magazine’s Great British Growing Awards are returning to Glee again this September – virtually, as a part of Glee Gathering.

These awards recognise all that is great within the gardening industry – from tool companies, to seed suppliers, garden writers to fruit nurseries and everything in between, and really shine a light on those who are going the extra mile.

This year’s Great British Growing Awards are nominated and voted for by consumers. This highlights to the industry the favourite products and brands chose by gardeners and what will be in demand for 2021!

The e-commerce conundrum: Creating sustainable online operations...

The e-commerce conundrum: Creating sustainable online operations.

During lockdown many garden centres were forced to rapidly evolve their online operations.

One such area is in eCommerce and online presence. With the slow resumption of normal operations, how can you develop an online strategy that is sustainable for the long-term?

How can an online presence help to engage with your customers? What are the big wins of operating online? How can you set up a sustainable fulfilment operation?

Wednesday, 16 September: 11:00 – 12:00

Hospitality and Food: Taking advantage of the ‘Shop Local’ trend...

According to research it takes 66 days to build a new habit. During lockdown, many consumers formed new habits, with many being forced to discover local food retailers on their doorstep when supermarkets and deliveries where difficult to access.  This has led to a consumer movement around shopping locally and supporting local businesses.

Importantly, customers can see who their money is going too and are really embracing the notion of supporting their community and voting with their wallets with which businesses they are now supporting.

Developing a hospitality or food offering within your Garden Centre is a well-established way to help make your location a destination experience and diversify your income, but for many local farm shops have also helped tap into the conscious consumer market. What are the best ways to set up a farm shop/café?

How can you build lasting relationships with local farmers and suppliers? How can you continue to make yourself a centre of the community whilst ensuring a level of business resilience?

Sustainability: Time to #BuildBackBetter?

Sustainability: Time to #BuildBackBetter?

The retail industry as whole is undergoing transformational change as it explores new operating models and supply chains.

However, it’s vitally important that in a post-Covid world, the sustainability agenda is not forgotten as to consumers it’s still toward the top of theirs.

Join this cross industry panel as they discuss their journey, key starting points, and the importance of building goof practices into the core of your brand values.

The question is, with many competing priorities, how can you continue to bring sustainable processes into your business, and importantly, how do you communicate this to your customer?
